The DVI standard was developed before HDMI and doesn't normally contain any audio, just digital image and sync signals.
The later developed HDMI standard contains also audio. Stereo only in version 1.0, but nowadays with version 1.3 also Dolby and DTS, even in HD format. In version 1.4 an ethernet signal will also be carried in an HDMI cable.
